“I am a lover of learning, and trees and open country won’t teach me anything, whereas men in the city do.” Socrates in Plato’s Phaedrus
Local newspapers are dying a slow death throughout our nation. Those still in existence fill out most of their pages with newswires of national and international stories which are old-news in this internet age by the time they arrive at our doorstep. But it is not all the local newsman’s fault…
Fascinated with the allure of celebrity and reared toward a taste for the tabloid, we have made the decision to read about a world that is at once far beyond our ability to meaningfully engage and seemingly more interesting than our own. To be sure, there are good reasons to inform ourselves with the affairs of this nation and our world. But there are more reasons to engage your city and its happenings, only without many forums to do so. That’s where Think Denton comes in…
This site will serve as a collection of news, interest stories, and reflections on life in Denton, Texas. As we return to the concrete from the abstract, we might just find, as Socrates did, that the universal can only be discovered when we start with the particular. He discovered the all-important and enduring human things – questions of justice, of beauty, of goodness, and ultimately of our own humanity – were found through a daily engagement and questioning of his fellow city-dwellers of Athens. Join us as we think Denton.
