In order to give you an intimate and close-up view of each of the candidates for Denton City Council, we are inviting each of them to come up to the third floor library of the Roden House for a conversation with Kevin Roden. More interviews will be added as they happen…
03.26.10 – Conversation with Mayor Mark Burroughs.
This interview is a bit longer than the others. Because he is our current mayor and because it seems his answers to the questions provide an excellent primer for those interested in understanding local issues and politics, I took the liberty of posting the interview in its entirety (in five parts). To help you navigate the issues, I have noted the topics of conversation for each video clip:
Video #1 – Why he wants to be mayor – Denton’s economy
Video #2 – Denton’s economy, cont. – Economic Development – Downtown Denton Plans – Drilling at Rayzor Ranch
Video #3 – Drilling at Rayzor Ranch, cont. – Powers of City versus State and Federal – Struggle communicating with citizens
Video #4 – NX35 – Gretchen Bataille and UNT issues – Thoughts on opponent, Bob Clifton
Video #5 – Future Political Ambitions – What feeds his creativity
03.23.10 – Conversations with At Large Place 6 Candidate James King (in two parts):
03.23.10 – Conversations with At Large Place 6 Candidate Hatice Salih (in two parts):
03.16.10 – Conversation with Mayoral Candidate Bob Clifton (in two parts). The video quality is quite poor, so I apologize in advance, but the audio is clear:
03.16.10 – Conversation with At-Large Place 6 candidate Phil Kregel (in two parts). The video quality is quite poor, so I apologize in advance, but the audio is clear:
03.08.10 – Conversation with At-Large Place 5 candidate Eliborio Beltran, AKA “Eli Gemini” (in two parts):

I would think that the name of the mayor of the town in which you are running would be a common piece of information in city council elections.
Maybe not, though.

Hello Will and thank you for your comment post on me not readily knowing the mayor’s name.
It just comes to show how disconnected Mayor Burroughs is with a big segment of a number of individuals and communities in Denton.
I sometimes don’t even remember his name.
It appears to me that Mayor Burroughs is just connected with, and only out to serve himself, certain individuals, businesses, and groups.
I have not seen much of the mayor reach out and address many of the issues and matters in city business; namely “minority” segments in Denton including those of us that are gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender.
Thanks again Kevin for inviting me to speak and posting our interview on ThinkDenton.com .
Keep up the great work!
Sincerely,
Eli Gemini

Great work here, gentlemen.
Looking forward to seeing more attic posts, so that I can compare bananas to bananas.
Big fan of ThinkDenton.com, keep it up!

Awesome job, Kevin!
Very informative stuff. Once again makes me thankful I live in such a great town
Keep up the good work!

So what is going to be done about the benzene Mr. Burroughs? Yes, it does take too long to explain all the nuances, but what is going on with this now? Are we just going to live with it? Perhaps this info is somewhere out there but it would be nice to have it be re-iterated here. It would help, as you might say, instill the faith we citizens need in our local government.

Hello Ms. Cobb. Thank you for the invitation. However, under protest, and because I know and have evidence to show that you and the Denton Record-Chronicle are a corrupt organization and engaging in unlawful and
criminal activity by covering up for the crimes committed by the City of Denton and the City of Denton Police Department (and God only knows who else), I will
not be accepting your invitations.
Please forward this e-mail to Mr. Roden.
I ask that Mr. Roden or someone at this gathering read this reply to all of those attending on my behalf as to why I am not accepting your invites.
Hollywood and the film industry seem to want to know what I know about you and your paper. They will be informed.
Signed,
Eliborio Beltrán

Hello Lowell. Just dropping a line to give you and the Denton Record-Chronicle a heads-up on the latest evidence against the corruption case against the City of Denton, City of Denton Police Department, Interfaith
Ministries of Denton, Inc.(IMODI), Jorge D. Urbina (Current Chair of the Denton Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, former Chair of IMODI Board of Directors), Condell Garden (Current Executive Director for IMODI), Charles Wiley (Current Chief of Police for the City of Galveston and former Chief of Police for the City of
Denton; former Chief of Police for the Houston Independent School District), Stephanie Berry (Current City of Denton Prosecution Attorney), et al.*
While we don’t expect you or your paper to follow-up on these stories, much less work on them and inform the citizens of Denton, we thought we’d at least bring it to your attention.
As you know, I have been very publicly critical (and fairly so I will add) of you and the Denton Record-Chronicle for not following up or printing the story
and other related matters that I have forwarded to you.
The story and evidence that we have is that you, your supervisors, and the Denton Record-Chronicle are covering up for the City of Denton, the City of Denton Police Department, and others.
You know where to reach me if you want to learn more about this for a story in the Denton Record-Chronicle.
Sincerely,
Eli Gemini

PUBLIC STATEMENT: My arrest – Possession of Marijuana (Under 2 oz.)
PUBLIC STATEMENT
(Re: My release from the Denton County Jail after serving 13 days; and two days
in the City of Denton jail. Charge: Class B Misdemeanor, Possession of
Marijuana, under 2 oz.)
BY
ELI GEMINI
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16, 2009, 7:30 PM
Before anything, I would like to state that I am, and will continue to be, a staunch supporter for the reformation of marijuana laws – especially for medicinal purposes. I would also like to state that this arrest, and by me serving jail time in the Denton County Jail, was a blessing in disguise as I was able to get an inside look and a personal experience on how some inmates are being mistreated by some of the jail’s staff namely the Division of Correctional Medicine), and some violations of civil rights both inside and outside of this jail system.
On Thursday afternoon, July 30, 2009, I was arrested by a Denton Police officer at the 1900 block of North Ruddell Street here in Denton, Texas. I was charged with a Class B Misdemeanor, Possession of Marijuana under 2 oz. I was booked at the Denton Police Department Jail. Bond was set at $500.00 by Judge Robin Ramsay. After two days at the Denton City Jail, I was transferred to the Denton County Jail. After two days in the “holding tank”, I was transferred as a trusty status to Pod 13. On the day that I arrived at Pod 13, I introduced myself to a male medical staff member that was dispensing medications for the other inmates. I informed this male staff member that I am a person with chronic lower back problems, that I am in excruciating pain, that I came in with three of my prescription medications properly labeled under my name, and that there are other medications at my apartment that I should be taking, and if he and his medical department could please assist me with getting my medications so that they may be administered to me while I am serving my jail time. He told me that he would see what he could do. The guards and medical staff just kept telling me to, “Put in a request.” I began putting in written requests on a daily basis to the Property Department (I wanted to see about getting access to my cell phone so that I could call my friends so that they could go to my apartment and to bring me my other medications) and the the Medical Department. A number of days went by. At this point, at no time did anyone come to me and see me about my verbal and/or written requests; or pleads for medical
assistance. Since my medications were not being administered to me and still in very much pain, it appears that my body went into some kind of reserve and I could not eat for a couple of days because I was simply not hungry. No appetite. On or about the third day, I was assigned to work duty and assist in
dispensing commissary to other jail inmates. During this time I began to feel dizzy, weak, delirious, my eye site began going dark, and sweating profusely. I was taken by emergency to the Infirmary where two nurses were standing by. An oxygen mask was placed on me, some heart monitors, blood pressure, blood sample, and other tests and monitors. They also did a saline IV. A group of about seven medical employees were working on me by the end. After about three and a half hours of treatment and observation, the medical staff felt that I had recovered and sent me back to Pod 13 (without any medical excuse or note to the Pod 13 officers and staff). Late that evening, and after the shift had changed,
I was called out of my bunk by an officer in Pod 13. He wanted me to go out and work. Something about cleaning floors. I explained to him that as much as I would like to help and go to work that I simply could not as I did not have the strength because of the medical emergency earlier that day. He asked me if I had a medical excuse from the medical department. I told him that I did not and that they did not give me one. The officer quickly exclaimed that I was good enough to go work that night. I told him that I disagreed with what he had said and that I am not well enough to go work as I almost passed out earlier that day. He finally sent another inmate in my place. I continued to put in daily requests for the Property Department and the Medical Department to see if someone could please help me get a number from my cell phone so that my friends could bring me the rest of my medicines from my apartment. My requests went unanswered. Pursuant to the inmate handbook, I submitted a written request tothe Jail Administrator to see if she or he could assist me. I never received a reply from the Jail Administrator. I had tried in good faith to follow the policies and procedures for written requests to no avail. After a while, I was again listed to go out and work in or around the jail. I told them that I am not well and that I have not been given the medicines my body requires. I was stripped away of my trusty status and transferred from Pod 13 to section D-1-2. Pod 13 had it in their minds that I simply did not want to work. While at section D-1-2, I continued with my written requests in hopes that someone would come to my aid and assist me with getting all of my medications. No one did. I decided to exercise my constitutional right of freedom of speech and petition my government for a redress of grievances and began civil disobedience and went on a “hunger strike”; since no one was coming to my aid and since I had already exhausted all the established policies and procedures as established in the inmate handbook. One officer and one supervisor at D-1-2 thought that I just wanted to make and cause trouble so they transferred me to section B-6. A couple of days went by into my “hunger strike” refusing all meals. I began to feel dizzy. I was again about to pass out. I called upon an fellow inmate to call a guard as I was about to pass out. They again took me to the Infirmary. They ran similar tests as in the first time. It was not looking good. The medical staff then called 911 emergency. I was taken by ambulance to the Emergency Room at Denton Regional Hospital (DRH). It was serious. I made it through. I explained to the ER staff at DRH what had happened and why I had decided, as a last resort, to go on a “hunger strike”. They did not seem pleased with the medical staff at the jail. I was taken back to jail and spent the night for observation in the medical wing. My court-appointed attorney, Robert Wiley, did come to visit me on Tuesday, August 11, 2009. He explained to me the as he understood the law, I am to be released after serving 15 days total. I was released from the Denton County Jail on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at 5:47 PM. A couple of hours before being released, the medical staff FINALLY gave me the numbers that I was requesting all along. I was released on a PR (Personal Recognizance) Bond by Judge Robin Ramsay. While inside the jail, I did get some reports of police misconduct by a number of inmates. I did introduce myself to most of the inmates as a freelance broadcast journalist and local civil rights advocate. I plan to follow up on those stories and statements and begin to write and report on those inmates stories. I was also able to see that some Spanish-speaking inmates that do not speak, read, or write English are not aware of what is happening with their arrests and cases; and are not fully aware of their rights, the information on their documents, their cases, court orders, and other legal and pertinent information. I have extensively researched the subject on the medicical uses for marijuana. I am convinced that the smoking of marijuana does help some patients with a variety of side-effects from prescpription drugs, as well helping improve their general health – not to mention their apetite. I have also learned a great deal on the medicinal uses of marijuana as a result of having as a guest on my television show – George McMahon. Mr. McMahon is one of eight U.S citizens to be prescribed medicinal marijuana through the U.S. federal government. You may learn more about the medicinal uses of marijuana from Mr. McMahon’s web site: http://www.trvnet.net/~mmcmahon/
I believe that my jail time was excessive, does not fit the offense, and that the Denton County tax payers money can be better spent in other areas and not on offenses as minor as this one. I suggest a citation and pay a fine. As a future candidate for the City of Denton City Council, District One in 2011, I will make this arrest, and the medicinal uses of marijuana a campaign topic. I am resting comfortably at my apartment with my two assistive dogs – Harley and Delta; and taking some days to regain my strength. I would like to take this time to publicly thank my good friends: Deneshia, Scott, Darrell, Rolanda, Lloyd, and Christal for their assistance and for their support while I was incarcerated. Thank you.

The website also serves the dual purpose of promoting the popular Drink and Think series of community discussions which are hosted at the historic Roden home on Texas Street and have been attended by thousands of locals over the last ten years. During the 2010 City Council race, THINKDENTON.com provided the community with some of the most up-to-date coverage and commentary of the candidates and the race. Attempting new ways to draw a younger demographic into the political discussion, Roden met with each of the candidates for a very lo-fi videotaped interview in his third floor library and called it, “Interviews in the Attic.” [...]
